BUILDING TRACKS PROGRAM
The “Building Tracks” program is our foremost plan to increase physical activity in young children by outfitting every elementary school with a 1/8-mile primary track and athletic field. These facilities will serve thousands of children daily during PE as well as before and after school programs, community sports teams and the general public on weekends. Our first track is close to completion in Oceanside, California.
The statistics regarding childhood obesity are staggering! It is well documented in professional journals, magazines and newspapers that childhood obesity is at an epidemic level nationwide.
According to the Surgeon General’s statement on the US Department of Heath & Human Services website overweight in children and adolescents is generally caused by lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns or a combination of the two coupled with genetics and lifestyles. 43% of children watch more than two hours a day of television. The most immediate consequence of overweight as perceived by the children themselves is social discrimination.
The effect of obesity in children is not just noted on the level of self-confidence. It has grave implications on normal physical, emotional, behavioral, and mental development. All of which dramatically affect the wellbeing of the individual, not to mention increasing the costs of healthcare throughout their lifetime.
Through partnerships with companies such as John Laing Homes, Turf Technologies, Buccola Engineering, Friedin Landscaping and Construction Design and Oceanside Unified School District we are in the final phases of our prototype 1/8-mile primary track and synthetic athletic field at Ivey Ranch Elementary in Oceanside, Ca.
It is our wish that you will join us in this mission. What this foundation has mapped out WILL make a difference. We ask you to please consider how you can help The Gibraltar Foundation in its mission to make better lives, not only for today’s youth, but for future generations as well. Thank you!
