HEALTHY SNACKS PROGRAM
Recently a local elementary school had this tale to tell: A second grade student was offered a piece of fruit provided to him by a program that makes healthy snacks available for kids during recess. When the little boy took a bite out of the fruit he scrunched his face up and told his teacher “This fruit doesn’t taste very good!” To his teacher’s amazement, noticing where he had bitten into the fruit, she said “Honey, you need to peel the orange first, before you eat it.” Once his teacher showed him how to peel an orange he took a bit and exclaimed, “Wow, this is SO GOOD!” .
Unfortunately this is not the first, nor will it be the last, elementary school aged child to taste fresh fruit for the first time in their young life. Unlike the children of twenty, fifteen, even just ten years ago – fruit is no longer a snack offered, considered or even requested. This unfortunate FACT needs to change. And it needs to change NOW.
WE CAN STOP CHILDHOOD OBESITY
Our Healthy Snacks program is an effort to expose children to a fresh fruit and or vegetable once a week on the way out to recess. We will be working with the local school districts, their PTA/PTOs, as well as additional volunteers to ensure all children have the opportunity to taste the fabulous healthy snacks that are available.
We are currently looking for local growers and grocery store/supermarkets who are interested in participating in this valuable program. Our first school has 37 classrooms, with 685 students. Please join us fight this childhood epidemic that is sweeping the nation, please contact us.
It is our wish that you will join us in this mission. What this foundation has mapped out WILL make a difference. We ask you to please consider how you can help The Gibraltar Foundation in its mission to make better lives, not only for today’s youth, but for future generations as well. Thank you!
